SoTD: Dan Fogelberg – Same Old Lang Syne

Met my old lover in the grocery store
The snow was falling Christmas eve
I stole behind her in the frozen foods
And I touched her on the sleeve
She didn’t recognize the face at first
But then her eyes flew open wide
She went to hug me and she spilled her purse
And we laughed until we cried.
We took her groceries to the checkout stand
The food was totaled up and bagged
We stood there lost in our embarrassment
As the conversation dragged.
We went to have ourselves a drink or two
But couldn’t find an open bar
We bought a six-pack at the liquor store
And we drank it in her car.
We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to now
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness
But neither one knew how.
She said she’d married her an architect
Who kept her warm and safe and dry
She would have liked to say she loved the man
But she didn’t like to lie.
I said the years had been a friend to her
And that her eyes were still as blue
But in those eyes I wasn’t sure if I saw
Doubt or gratitude.
She said she saw me in the record stores
And that I must be doing well
I said the audience was heavenly
But the traveling was hell.
We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to now
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness
But neither one knew how.
We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to time
Reliving in our eloquence
Another auld lang syne…
The beer was empty and our tongues were tired
And running out of things to say
She gave a kiss to me as I got out
And I watched her drive away.
Just for a moment I was back at school
And felt that old familiar pain
And as I turned to make my way back home
The snow turned into rain…

SoTD: The Mighty Lemon Drops – My Biggest Thrill

I’m getting sick and tired,
of felling like I do,
and I can’t understand, why I’m sad about you,
and if its so bad then it should be alright by now,
and if its so bad then it should be alright by now,
now that my thrill,
started a diamond hill,
you were my biggest thrill.
I know you tried to hurt me,
seen it in your face,
you took my world, my world, my world — its not a pretty place,
it would be so good if I could keep all up my head,
’cause it took so long to forget about the things you said,
Now that my thrill,
started a diamond hill,
You were my biggest thrill.
Don’t want to see you,
Don’t want to touch you,
Don’t want to hold you now baby…
Want to forget you,
Wo wo wo..
I’m getting sick and tired,
feeling like I do,
and though I can’t understand,
why I’m sad about you,
and if its so bad then it should be alright by now,
and if its so bad then it should be alright by now.
Now that my thrill,
started a diamond hill,
you were my biggest thrill.

Honey they’re bringin’ out a TV crew
They wanna do a story ’bout me and you
They’ll be stringin’ up bright lights in the backyard
There’ll be cameras on their shoulders
We’ll be readin’ cue cards
Leave them long johns on the line
If the kids look dirty, that’ll be just fine
They’re gonna put us on
Lifestyles of the not so rich and famous
They wanna see us go hog wild
Over beans and barbecue
They wanna see my Fairlane up on blocks
The holes in all our socks
Talkin’ ’bout lifestyles of the not so rich and famous
Tell ‘em bout your mama and the bowling league
Tell ‘em bout junior and his baseball team
I’ll show ‘em my nine point buck on the wall
I’ll blow a few times on my new duck call
Let ‘em see ol’ blue how he sleeps all day
We’ll bring out the Elvis TV trays
They’re gonna put us on
Lifestyles of the not so rich and famous
They wanna see us go hog wild
Over beans and barbecue
They wanna see my Fairlane up on blocks
The holes in all our socks
Talkin’ ’bout lifestyles of the not so rich and famous
Yeah our idea of high class livin’
Is sittin’ on the porch on a cool night
Our Champagne and Caviar
Is an RC cola and a moon pie
I’m talkin’ ’bout lifestyles of the not so rich and famous
Lifestyles of the not so rich and famous

He’s been with the world
and I’m tired of the soup du jour
he’s been with the world
I wanna end this prophylactic tour
afraid nobody around here
understands my potato
guess I’m only a spudboy
looking for a real tomato
we’re the smart patrol
nowhere to go
suburban robots that monitor reality
common stock
we work around the clock
we shove the poles in the holes
Wait a minute
somethings wrong
he’s the man from the past
he’s here to do us a favor
a little human sacrifice
it’s just supply and demand
Mr. Kamikaze, Mr. DNA!
he’s an altruistic pervert
Mr. DNA Mr. Kamikaze
he’s here to spread some genes
wait a minute
somethings wrong
he’s a man with a plan
his finger is pointed at Devo
now we must sacrifice ourselves
that many others may live
ok we’ve got a lot to give
this monkey wants a word with you
Mr. Kamikaze Mr. DNA!
he’s an altruistic pervert
Mr. DNA Mr. Kamikaze
he’s here to spread some genes
Mr. Kamikaze Mr. DNA!
he’s an altruistic pervert
Mr. DNA Mr. Kamikaze…

You put yourself in stupid places
Yes I think you know its true
Situations where its easy to look down on you
I think you like to be the victim
I think you like to be in pain
I think you make yourself a victim
Almost every single day
You do what you do
You say what you say
You try to be everything to everyone
You know all the right people
You play all the right games
You always try to be
Everything to everyone
Yeah you do it again
You always do it again
You say they taught you how to read and write
Yeah, they taught you how to count
I say they taught you how to buy and sell
Your own body by the pound
I think you like to be their simple toy
I think you love to play the clown
I think you are blind to the fact
That the hand you hold is the hand that holds you down
You do what you do
You say what you say
You always try to be everything to everyone
You know all the right people
You play all the right games
You always try to be everything to everyone
Spin around and fall down, do it again
You stumble and you fall
Yeah why dont you ever learn
Spin around and fall down, do it again
Yeah, you stumble and you fall
I wonder if you will ever learn
Why wont you ever learn
Come on now, do that stupid dance for me
You do what they tell you to do
You say what you say
You try to be everything to everyone
You jump through the big hoop
You play all the right games
You try to be everything to everyone
Spin around and fall down, do it again
You stumble and you fall
Yeah you do it again
Spin around and fall down, do it again
You stumble and you fall

I don’t know what she’s doin’,
I think she’s got a brand new bag.
Mama, come here quick,

Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree, of all the trees most lovely.

Each year you bring to me delight, meaning in the Christmas night.
Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree, of all the trees most lovely.
Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree, with faithful leaves unchanging.
Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree, with faithful leaves unchanging.
Your boughs are green in summers glow and do not fade in winters snow.

Ben, the two of us need look no more
We both found what we were looking for
With a friend to call my own
I’ll never be alone
And you, my friend, will see
You’ve got a friend in me
(you’ve got a friend in me)
Ben, you’re always running here and there
You feel you’re not wanted anywhere
If you ever look behind
And don’t like what you find
There’s one thing you should know
You’ve got a place to go
(you’ve got a place to go)
I used to say “I” and “me”
Now it’s “us”, now it’s “we”
I used to say “I” and “me”
Now it’s “us”, now it’s “we”
Ben, most people would turn you away
I don’t listen to a word they say
They don’t see you as I do
I wish they would try to
I’m sure they’d think again
If they had a friend like Ben
(a friend) Like Ben
(like Ben) Like Ben

SoTD: Green Day – Wake Me Up When September Ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocence can never last
Wake me up when September ends
Like my fathers come to pass
Seven years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends
Here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are
As my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends
Summer has come and passed
the innocence can never last
Wake me up when September ends
Ring out the bells again
like we did when spring began
Wake me up when September ends
Here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are
As my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends
Summer has come and passed
The innocence can never last
Wake me up when September ends
Like my father’s come to pass
Twenty years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends
Wake me up when September ends
Wake me up when September ends

SoTD: Tom T. Hall – Sneaky Snake

Boys and girls take warning, if you go near the lake
Keep your eyes wide open, and look for sneaky snake
Now maybe you won’t see him, maybe you won’t hear
But he’ll sneak up behind you, and drink all your root beer
And then sneaky snake goes dancin’, wigglin’ and a-hissin’
Sneaky snake goes dancin, gigglin’ and a-kissin’
I don’t like old sneaky snake; he laughs too much you see
When he goes wigglin’ through the grass, it tickles his underneath
Well, sneaky snake drinks root beer, and he just makes me sick
When he is not dancin’, he looks just like a stick
Now, he doesn’t have any arms or legs, you cannot see his ears
And while we are not lookin, he’s stealin’ all of our beer
And then sneaky snake goes dancin, wigglin and a-hissin
Sneaky snake goes dancin’, gigglin’ and a-kissin’
I don’t like old sneaky snake; he laughs too much you see
When he goes wigglin’ through the grass, it tickles his underneath
